An Amazing Start

Gratitude

Reflecting on this last week of classes, I am grateful to see so many new dancers joining SDA. I also stepped into a new role at the studio… that of a parent. I watched my kiddo join the studio as new dancer, taking Acro. I teared up, I grinned until it hurt, and I had to laugh at my own amazement (and yes, maybe a little shock) that he was being a pretty good listener. Because as any parent of a 5 year old knows - they don’t always listen to you 😅

So I am grateful for our new dancers, grateful for our returning dancers that are stepping into the role of leaders, grateful to see my own kiddo in class with a big smile on his face, and grateful for my amazing SDA team making it all happen.

Our Values & Our Mission

Our Values: Compassion & Kindness • Inspiring Creativity • Daily Gratitude • Honor & Celebrate • Community Service

If you haven’t picked up your welcome folder yet, be sure to grab it from the entry table. Among other things, inside is an SDA values workbook. Dancers that finish their workbook can bring it back to the office for a special surprise.

We expect this workbook to take a few months to fill out. Though this week we received our first completed submission! Michelle and I sat in the office flipping through the answers and loving the reflections of a 10 year old.

What Makes a Community Strong & Connected?

What makes a community strong and connected is knowing each other, being comfortable with yourself, being honest, and being willing to stand up for each other. -K.M, 10 years old

Yes, yes, and yes!!!

Our Mission: Empowering Students & Community Through Dance

Long gone are the days of “children should be seen and not heard”. I would like to go a step further and give our dancers a platform for their voices to be heard.

At SDA we believe that listening to what our dancers have to say helps to empower them and promote their own sense of worth and belonging. And we love hearing what they have to say!

We’ll start sharing monthly prompts to get our dancers thinking and writing, then share some results in our Empowered Voices blog posts.

Upcoming

Bring a Friend Week: September 26th-October 1st. Friendship is essential for mental and emotional health. And what better way to connect with a friend, than sharing the joy of dance?!

If you are planning to bring a real friend, shoot us an email at hello@sherwooddance.com with contact information for your friend’s grownup. If your class is full, please double check with the office or your instructor to see if we can fit extra students.

All my best,
Liana MacFarlane
